MARION — Perhaps, someday, a bigger school will come calling. Maybe not.
'My mom mentioned that very thing,' Kamryn Finley said. 'I'd be flattered, but I'm going to be a Panther. That's what I've committed to.'
A sophomore at Linn-Mar High School, Finley gave an oral commitment to UNI women's basketball coach Tanya Warren on Monday. She'll join the Panthers for the 2018-19 season.
'Even before I visited, I knew I was going to love it,' said Finley, a 5-foot-8 guard. 'I love the campus. It's not too big, not too small. And I love the coaching staff. I am so comfortable around them.'
Finley chose UNI over Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake, which also had offered her a scholarship. UNI is the reigning MVC regular-season champion.
'I just didn't see any reason to wait,' said Finley, who intends to major in education. 'I wanted to tell Coach Warren, right then and there (Monday), that I wanted to play for her. I love the way their teams play. They play hard, and the coaches push them and want them to improve.'
Finley averaged 12.2 points per game as the Lions went 20-5 and reached the Class 5A state semifinals last season. She has scored 502 points in two varsity seasons at Linn-Mar.
