Jon Prottsman announces resignation at Regina

IOWA CITY — Jon Prottsman has molded Iowa City Regina into a softball powerhouse.

Now, he said, it's time to take care of himself.

Citing health issues, Prottsman confirmed Sunday afternoon that he has resigned his position.

'It's hard to let go,' he said. 'But it's time.'

Prottsman, 67, coached Regina to Class 2A state championships in 2011, 2015 and 2017. He posted a 258-177 in 11 years at Regina, 450-256 in 18 years overall.

He had major back surgery in 2011, but the pain has returned.

'I have to get it taken care of,' he said. 'There are a lot of things, including field work, that I just can't do right now.

'No time is really a good time. It's hard when you've done something so long. You ask kids to perform at a certain level, and sometimes they're going to surprise themselves.'

Prottsman's final game with the Regals was a doozy. Regina outlasted Eddyville EBF 5-4 in 16 innings for the 2A title in July. EBF scored three runs in the top of the 16th, then the Regals answered with four in the bottom half.
