NORTH LIBERTY — Jeff Kelley, who led Iowa City West to its first state-tournament appearance, will have the first shot at the softball program at Iowa City Liberty.
Principal Scott Kibby announced Kelley's hiring via Twitter on Saturday.
Kelley will teach social studies at Liberty. At West, he compiled a 153-58 record and coached the Women of Troy to the 2012 state tournament. He also owns a 643-106 mark in the junior-college ranks.
Kelley will coach the freshman team this summer, then take over the varsity program when it begins in 2018. The Lightning will compete as an independent that year, then transition to the Mississippi Valley Conference in 2019.
Coach Kelley will be Liberty's first head softball coach in 2018. This summer '17 he will lead our 9th grade team. Team meeting info soon. March 25, 2017
