Jean Berger, the first female executive director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, has announced her upcoming retirement.
Berger has served with the Union since 2016.
“It has been my honor to serve as the executive director of the IGHSAU and to work alongside some of the most talented staff, administrators, and student-athletes,” Berger said in a statement Tuesday.
“I am proud of what we have accomplished and am grateful for the confidence our leadership has always shown in me. I am excited for what lies ahead for the Iowa Girl.”
Berger was the fifth executive director in the nearly century-long history of the Union.
"Jean Berger’s tenure has been defined by her unwavering commitment to the mission and values of the IGHSAU,” said Russ Adams, IGHSAU board of directors president. “We are immensely grateful for her service and wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”
The search for the next executive director will begin immediately.
Berger was instrumental in the Union’s addition of girls’ wrestling as a sanctioned sport.
