Who's No. 1? In Class 3A, three teams can claim that distinction after four weeks of football.
Pella and Cedar Rapids Xavier have joined Norwalk atop The Gazette's rankings this week.
Each team is 4-0, with two-time defending champion Pella garnering the most first-place votes (three). Norwalk received two, while Xavier, which owns perhaps the best win among the three (Class 1A No. 1 Iowa City Regina), has one.
Some separation should come eventually — Pella and Norwalk meet Oct. 7. Xavier will be heavily favored in its last five games.
There's no question who the No. 1 teams are in 4A, 2A and 1A. West Des Moines Valley, North Fayette Valley and Regina are again unanimous picks. Don Bosco is a solid No. 1 in 8-player while Gladbrook-Reinbeck holds onto the top spot in Class A.
No. 2 Saint Ansgar and No. 5 Council Bluffs St. Albert also got Class A No. 1 votes. Algona Garrigan moved down to No. 3, West Sioux is fourth.
Iowa City High made one of the biggest leaps of the week, moving from No. 10 to No. 6 in Class 4A after beating rival Iowa City West, which dropped four spots to No. 9. Waterloo West is a new entrant, tied for 10th with Waukee.
Washington (Iowa) dropped out of the Class 3A rankings following a 36-15 loss to Solon, which re-joined the poll at No. 10.
Cascade's second straight top-10 defeat was enough to move the Cougars out of the Class 2A rankings, where South Central Calhoun and Williamsburg grabbed the final two spots.
Ackley AGWSR fell from the 8-Player top 10 following a 54-12 defeat to Don Bosco.
