Iowa prep football rankings: Changes at the top in Class A, 8-Player
Jeff Linder Oct. 24, 2016 2:52 pm
There's a new No. 1 in 8-Player football, and a crowded scene at the top of Class A in the final Gazette rankings of the season.
Fremont-Mills takes over the top spot in the 8-Player game after former No. 1 Audubon suffered a 34-28 loss Friday at Ar-We-Va.
The Class A race has been close at the top all season, and it ends with a three-way tie for No. 1 among defending-champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Saint Ansgar and Algona Garrigan.
West Des Moines Valley, Pella, North Fayette Valley and Iowa City Regina remain on top in Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A, respectively.
Valley is a unanimous No. 1 and is followed by West Des Moines Dowling, Ankeny Centennial and Cedar Rapids Washington.
Pella has won 37 consecutive games. The Dutch received five first-place votes (No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier got the other). Carroll is third, followed by Creston/Orient-Macksburg.
North Fayette Valley is unanimous atop the 2A poll and the lone unbeaten in that class. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is second, followed by Mount Vernon and Union.
Six-time defending champion Regina has been unanimous atop 1A all season. Pella Christian is No. 2, and those teams are on a collision course to play in a state quarterfinal next week.
• Prep football playoff pairings
Gladbrook-Reinbeck held the top spot in Class A last week, but the defending-champion Rebels have company now. G-R received three first-place votes, Saint Ansgar two. No. 4 Council Bluffs St. Albert received the other one.
Fremont-Mills is followed by Turkey Valley in 8-Player. Turkey Valley hosts No. 4 Don Bosco in a first-round game Friday at Jackson Junction.
Three of the top 10 teams in 8-Player (No. 5 Coon Rapids-Bayard, No. 7 Lone Tree and No. 10 Graettinger GTRA) did not make the playoffs.
