MARSHALLTOWN — The Mississippi Valley Conference has been flush all season with strong divers.
The depth of talent showed well on Friday at the girls’ state diving meet at the Marshalltown YMCA.
Waterloo East junior Avery Hogan captured the state title, edging Grinnell junior Trista Thompson by just 0.65 in the 11-dive contest.
Hogan finished with 470.10 points while Thompson ended up at 469.45. Iowa City West senior Samantha Klein came in as the top seed after scoring 493.35 at the regional meet. She wasn’t able to quite match that score Friday.
Klein, who will dive collegiately at Nebraska-Omaha, scored 462.00 to finish third after not being able to compete at state last year due to illness.
Overall, the MVC claimed eight of the top 16 spots in the contest. Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Nat Freeman, who was seeded second behind Klein, ended up fifth with 451.25 points.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s strong day gave the Cougars the lead in the meet after one day with 22 points. Kennedy placed three divers in the top 16. Junior Lacey Neighbor was seventh (447.00), senior Audrey Leno was ninth (446.35) while sophomore Kylie Ling was 16th (349.20).
Linn-Mar also had two divers in the top 16. Senior Corrin Williams was eighth (446.35). Another senior, Maggie Schlamp, was 14th (404.00).
Cedar Rapids Washington junior Isabel Hawker was 10th (440.30), just ahead of Decorah junior Brinley Krivach (424.85).
Swimming preliminaries were held Friday night. The top eight finishers in each event qualify for the final. The next eight finishers will be in the consolation final.
Swimming finals begin at noon Saturday.
