Iowa high school football rankings: Williamsburg is the new No. 1 in Class 2A

Williamsburg's steady, incremental climb has reached the summit.

The Raiders are the new No. 1 team in Class 2A in the Gazette/KGYM football rankings, released Monday. Williamsburg (4-0) moved to the top after defeating Camanche, 63-6, Friday while former No. 1 Waukon dropped a 25-20 decision to Cascade.

Waukon slipped six notches to No. 7, while Cascade rose from seventh to fourth.

The other five top-ranked teams remain the same — West Des Moines Dowling in 4A, Cedar Rapids Xavier in 3A, West Lyon in 1A, Council Bluffs St. Albert in Class A and Don Bosco in 8-Player.

All are 4-0.

Dowling has been methodical with wins of 42-18, 42-13, 42-12 and 48-21, the last two against No. 3 West Des Moines Valley and No. 5 Waukee.

Iowa City West remains at No. 2 after whipping Iowa City High, 52-6, in the Battle for the Boot and hosts No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie this week.

Xavier went to Charles City last week and rolled, 50-0, and faces a stern challenge at home Friday against No. 9 Decorah. Dallas Center-Grimes, Solon, Pella and Sergeant Bluff-Luton round out the top five.

Williamsburg is followed in 2A by Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, Mount Vernon, Cascade and Monroe PCM.

West Lyon retains a slim lead over Van Meter in 1A after both teams recorded 42-0 wins (over Unity Christian and South Hamilton, respectively). Iowa City Regina is third, followed by Pella Christian and Western Christian.

The top five in Class A are the same for the fifth consecutive week. It's St. Albert, then Gladbrook-Reinbeck, West Sioux, Lynnville-Sully and Algona Garrigan.

It's Don Bosco, Audubon, Remsen St. Mary's, Newell-Fonda and Harris-Lake Park in the 8-Player top five. St. Mary's travels to Newell-Fonda in a District 1 showdown Friday.
