Iowa high school football rankings: West Sioux, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley climb to No. 1

Much is yet to be determined in this football season, but this much is clear:

There will not be a wire-to-wire No. 1 in the Gazette/KGYM poll. Southwest Valley took care of that Friday night.

The Timberwolves upset former Class A top-ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert, 8-7, on a rainy evening statewide. That, and Hudson's 5-0 win over two-time defending state champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Saturday, threw upheaval into the A rankings.

West Sioux is the new No. 1 in the smallest 11-player class, followed by Hudson. Southwest Valley and Lynnville-Sully are tied for third, then it's 2016 runner-up Algona Garrigan at No. 5.

St. Albert was the last of the top-ranked preseason teams to fall. One of them, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, returns to the head of the pack in 2A after West Liberty knocked off Williamsburg, 14-9, Friday.

Unbeatens West Des Moines Dowling and Iowa City West remain 1-2 in 4A. The Maroons and the Trojans are followed by West Des Moines Valley, Bettendorf and Johnston.

The top five remain the same in 3A, led by Cedar Rapids Xavier — a 20-14 winner over Waverly-Shell Rock. Dallas Center-Grimes is No. 2, followed by Solon, Pella and Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Mount Vernon and Cascade each climb a spot, to No. 2 and No. 3 in 2A behind Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. Monroe PCM and Waukon are fourth and fifth.

The rankings do not reflect Monday's game between Waukon and No. 7 Union Community at Fayette. That game was rained out in the second quarter Friday.

In 1A, the top four remain the same — West Lyon, Van Meter, Iowa City Regina and Pella Christian. Same in 8-Player, with Don Bosco, Audubon, Remsen St. Mary's and Newell-Fonda.
