Iowa high school football rankings: Iowa City West, Xavier finish regular season at No. 1

Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Xavier will enter the postseason as the top-ranked team in their respective classes.

The final Gazette/KGYM football poll was released Monday, with the Trojans and the Saints earning No. 1 rankings.

West is the lone unbeaten in Class 4A and received the top rating from all six ballots for the second consecutive week. The Trojans open the playoffs at home against Cedar Rapids Washington (5-4).

There are no changes at the top end of the 4A rankings. West Des Moines Dowling, West Des Moines Valley, Bettendorf and Johnston hold down the rest of the top five spots. All are 8-1.

Xavier nailed down its third consecutive perfect regular season with a 62-7 rout of South Tama, and begins the 3A postseason at home against Oskaloosa (6-3).

Like last week, the Saints are followed by Dallas Center-Grimes, Solon, Pella and Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Solon (9-0) is allowing 2.3 points per game and has posted six shutouts, and hosts Decorah (7-2) on Friday.

The most balanced class is 2A, where four different teams received at least one first-place vote. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (8-1) got three of them, and claims the final top billing. Cascade is second, followed by Mount Vernon, Monroe PCM and Waukon.

As has been the case for the last eight weeks, West Lyon edges Van Meter for the top spot in 1A. Iowa City Regina is third, followed by Pella Christian and West Branch.

Seven teams in Class A finished the regular season unbeaten, and West Sioux closes as the No. 1 squad. Then it's Hudson, Southwest Valley, Algona Garrigan and Lynnville-Sully.

Don Bosco will begin its 8-Player title defense as the top-ranked team, and the Dons are followed by Audubon, Remsen St. Mary's, Newell-Fonda and Sidney.
