Iowa high school boys' basketball rankings: A new No. 1 in Class 3A

Dec. 18, 2017 3:51 pm, Updated: Dec. 18, 2017 4:24 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — There's a parochial school from a big city atop this week's Class 3A boys' basketball poll. No, not that one.
Sioux City Heelan is your new No. 1 in The Gazette's third rankings of the season, moving from third after an impressive 70-59 win over Class 4A second-ranked Sioux City East. Senior center Elijah Hazekamp had a humongous game for the Crusaders (4-0) with 27 points and 21 rebounds.
Two-time defending 3A champion Cedar Rapids Xavier (4-1) slips to second behind Heelan after taking its first loss of the season last week, 54-47, at home to Waterloo West. The Saints rebounded by edging Cedar Rapids Jefferson in their next game, 78-71.
Rounding out the top five in 3A are Glenwood (6-0 and third), Norwalk (7-0 and fourth) and Oskaloosa (8-0 and fifth). The rest of the No. 1s remain the same: Iowa City West in 4A, Western Christian in 2A and Grand View Christian in 1A.
Class 4A has become a jumbled mess, with parity all over the place. Only West (5-0) and fifth-ranked Dubuque Senior (4-0) are undefeated, with Senior escaping last week with a pair of two-point wins at home, the first full week without standout senior Noah Carter, who had surgery for compartment syndrome in his leg.
He's out indefinitely.
Des Moines North (5-1) jumped from eighth to second after a big win over fourth-ranked Johnston (4-1). Waukee (5-1) went from seventh to third.
Waukee beat North in the season opener by three points. Sioux City East (4-1) dropped from second to sixth after its loss to Heelan.
Linn-Mar (4-1) moved back into the 4A rankings at eighth. North Scott (5-1) also is a new entrant at No. 9, after its victory last week over 10th-ranked Pleasant Valley (5-1).
Class 2A remains the most stable, with every ranked team undefeated. Following Western Christian is Van Meter (6-0), Cascade (7-0), Forest City (7-0) and East Marshall (5-0).
Cascade hosts No. 10 Iowa City Regina (5-0) in a huge River Valley Conference game Tuesday night.
There also was a lot of stability in 1A, with North Linn (7-0) continuing to check in second behind Grand View Christian. Council Bluffs St. Albert (4-2) is third, Remsen St. Mary's (7-0) fourth and Lynnville-Sully (6-1) fifth.
Don Bosco (5-0) is sixth, Wapsie Valley (6-0) eighth.
Below are the entire rankings, with last week's ranking for each team in parentheses.
