Iowa high school baseball rankings: Eastern Iowa conferences well represented

Area conferences are well represented in the latest Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association rankings.

The Mississippi Valley, Wamac and Tri-Rivers conferences lead the way in the latest prep baseball polls released Monday.

Cedar Rapids Washington won five straight games last week, winning three straight games against ranked opponents to move into the top 10 of Class 4A. The Warriors are ranked seventh and one of five MVC teams in the polls. They are joined in the 4A rankings by conference competitors third-ranked Iowa City West, No. 4 Iowa City High and 10th-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie. Dubuque Wahlert is ninth in 3A.

The Wamac is not far behind with four teams ranked in three separate classes. Vinton-Shellsburg is ranked third in 3A, as Vikings Coach Jim Struve approaches the 600-win milestone. Marion is not far behind, coming in three spots back at sixth. Western Dubuque is ninth in 4A and Dyersville Beckman is seventh in 2A. Previously ranked Solon received votes in 3A, but didn't make the top 10 this week.

Tri-Rivers teams consist of 30 percent of the ranked teams in 1A, including the top-ranked program. North Linn moves into the top spot, switching positions with Mason City Newman. The Lynx opened the week at 29-2. Lisbon is sixth in 1A and rankings newcomer Calamus-Wheatland is 10th.

Three River Valley Conference teams are ranked, including sixth-ranked Cascade and No. 9 Iowa City Regina in 2A. Wilton leads the way, earning third in the 2A poll. RVC teams Monticello (2A) and Durant (1A) received votes.
