IOWA CITY - New faces, same results. Tasked with replacing the mammoth production of Oliver Martin and Devonte Lane, Iowa City West is finding no shortage of skill position players to fill the void. The explosive Trojans improved to 2-0, making short work of Muscatine 51-3 at West High Friday night.
West won a 31-27 Week 2 thriller over the Muskies last season. There was no such drama on this night. It started under center with senior quarterback Evan Flitz. A week after tallying 400 yards of total offense against Southeast Polk, Flitz continued to rack up the yards in a short night of work. Flitz tallied 209 yards through the air on just 11 passes, four of them going for touchdowns.
The Trojans were blessed with a short field most of the night. Just one of their first half touchdown drives began on their side of the field. The Muskies (0-2) were generous from the opening snap. Quarterback Jackson Foulk lost the ball on a keeper and Andrew White pounced at the Muscatine 40. A 5-play 40-yard drive was capped by a quick strike to Traevis Buchanan.
Buchanan got behind the defense for a 44-yard score two drives later and Dillon Doyle waltzed into the endzone untouched from 16 yards out for a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
The fireworks continued in the second. White received a kickoff, narrowly outran a defender to the edge, and turned upfield for a 95-yard touchdown.
'Once I got past the right hash I think I kind of knew I was gone,” White said.
The drive that did begin in West territory was short lived. Flitz lofted a ball down the left sideline. Jalen Gaudet reached over his defender to haul it in and sprint for the 76-yard score on the first play.
'I just had to get up and get position on him,” Gaudet said. 'It took a lot of concentration.”
The Trojans added one last score with the second half running clock.
