IOWA CITY — The rain held off until the second half Friday night in Iowa City, but it wouldn't have made a difference.
From the opening kickoff, which Jake Phillips returned 80 yards for a touchdown, to the final play, one of four forced fumbles by Iowa City Regina Regina, the Regals dominated their homecoming game against Van Buren, 43-6.
Head coach Marv Cook couldn't have imagined a better start to the game — kickoff return touchdown, kickoff, fumble, and a 19-yard passing touchdown to Jordan Kies.
'That's what I wanted to see,' Cook said. 'Cleaner running blocking, cleaner protections, and we did a lot of that. Our playmakers made plays, and it escalated pretty quickly.'
Michael Conlon played less than a quarter, completing all three passes for 84 yards and two scores. Regina seemed to score on every play in the first five minutes, leading to Ashton Cook being under center and Regina clearing its bench early in the game.
'The younger guys played really well,' Steven Sehl said. 'They played a lot better than I thought they were going to play.'
Isaac Vollstedt rushed for a 24-yard touchdown on his only carry, Troy Davison ran out of the end zone for a safety, and Conlon connected with Phillips for a 40-yard score, giving Regina a 30-0 lead 4:16 into the game.
Prescott Arendt also scored in the first on a 4-yard run.
Will Bobst and Theodor Kollie carried the load in the final three quarters for the Regals, though. Kollie led the team with 51 rushing yards, while Bobst added 47 yards and a second-quarter touchdown.
'(The rain) made it fun to get wet and muddy,' Bobst said.
Regina improves to 5-2 overall and 5-0 in district. Van Buren fell to 1-6 and 0-5.
Regina held Van Buren to 82 passing yards on 6-of-16 passing.
