NORTH LIBERTY — Mississippi Valley Conference wrestlers put on a show Saturday during the conference’s second girls’ wrestling tournament.
Cedar Falls took home the team title with 310 points. Cedar Rapids Prairie was second with 227.
Here are five storylines from Liberty High School:
Liberty’s first titles
Taylor Cavanh and Evelyn Eggleston are captains for the Lightning this season. The junior duo led the Bolts to a fourth-place team finish with 143.5 points, while also winning the program’s first individual conference titles in girls’ wrestling.
Cavanh defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Ashlyn Garcia by fall in 3:49 at 105 pounds. Eggleston got a 11-1 major decision over Dubuque Senior’s Jolee Strohmeyer to win the title at 140.
Seery leads Lions
Kate Seery is no stranger to the top of the podium. The junior continued her winning ways en route to the 100-pound title, pinning Cedar Falls’ Annabelle Rohret in 1:32.
Seery was the top seed in her weight class and won all of her matches by fall, except her semifinal match against Kammie Gleiter of Western Dubuque. That match resulted in a 9-2 decision.
Meade gets 100th win
Before she started her opening match, Luisa Meade had quite the matside cheering section, as Prairie wrestlers and cheerleaders filed in to cheer on the Hawk to her 100th victory.
She got the milestone win in a commanding fashion, as she pinned Iowa City West’s Ayla Bleil in 19 seconds. Meade went on to finish fourth.
Cougar repeats
Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Joscelyn Stricker and Ella Brown repeated as finalists for the Cougars at 190 and 235.
Together, the duo posted three falls to make their way into the finals. Stricker pinned Wahlert’s Leah Roling in 1:29 during the quarters and Divine Akili of Linn-Mar in 4:49 during the semis. Brown pinned Gracelynn McCarthy of Western Dubuque in 38 seconds during her semifinal bout.
Stricker fell to Cedar Falls’ Briar Ludeman in the finals, 9-2. Brown won her bracket with a fall over Prairie’s Emelia Reyes in 2:32.
Prairie’s 6 finalists
Cedar Rapids Prairie led area schools with six finalists — Elizabeth Burns (100), Lily Gearheart (125), Mackenzie Childers (130), Claire Hynek (135), Addison Bowman (170), and Reyes (235).
Childers was the lone champ, winning by fall in 47 seconds over Cedar Falls’ Jobie Conway.
