Area girls' tennis players to watch this spring.
Ellie Anderson, jr., Linn-Mar — 2014 Class 2A singles state qualifier who will play No. 1 singles for the Lions after a year away from the game.
Magui Caro, sr., C.R. Prairie — First team all-MVC and 2A doubles state semifinalist in 2014.
Vale Caro, jr., C.R. Prairie — Two-time first team all-MVC. 2014 MVC Valley Athlete of the Year. 2015 Class 2A singles state quarterfinalist, state semifinalist in doubles in 2014.
Susanna Gianola, sr., Iowa City High — Two-time doubles state qualifier.
Nicole Glanz, sr., Linn-Mar – First team all-MVC last season.
Innes Hicsasmaz, sr., Iowa City High — Three-time first team all-MVC. 2015 singles state qualifier, 2014 doubles state qualifier.
Abby Jans, jr., Iowa City West — Doubles state quarterfinalist in 2A last season.
Kelly King, jr., C.R. Washington — 2A singles state qualifier last season.
Emma Koch, fr., Iowa City West — Highly-regarded freshman who will immediately assume the No. 1 singles spot for the Women of Troy.
Hannah Sherman, jr., C.R. Washington — Two-time first team all-MVC. 2015 2A doubles semifinalist and 2014 2A singles state qualifier.
Area girls' teams to watch.
Cedar Rapids Prairie — The Hawks appear poised to go even further than last year's state tournament team. Four of their top five players return, led by Vale Caro and her sister Magui, who missed last year's regional and state tournament. Junior Karleigh Schilling and sophomore Anna Postnikov qualified for the individual state tournament as doubles partners, while senior Lauren O'Brian gained valuable postseason experience.
Iowa City High — Even with the graduation loss of 2A singles state champion Eve Small, the Little Hawks return plenty from an 18-1 team that won the MVC. Senior Innes Hicsasmaz elevates to the top of the lineup, while Susanna Gianola, Bihotza James and Lucy Wagner will compete for slots two through four.
Linn-Mar – Not only do the Lions return every significant contributor from last season, 2014 2A singles state qualifier Ellie Anderson returns after a year away and will play No. 1 singles. Linn-Mar closed last season with a lot of momentum, winning six of 11 duals after an 0-5 start and was a game away from competing for a regional championship.
