Feb. 8, 2016 4:02 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — There's a new No. 1 in Class 2A.
Western Christian has taken the top spot there in the latest Gazette boys' basketball poll. The Wolfpack (18-1) jump ahead of previously top-ranked and defending 2A champ Treynor (16-1), which dropped its first game of the season last week, 68-67, to IKM-Manning.
Dike-New Hartford (20-0) is the only unbeaten left in the class and is ranked second. Treynor is third, followed by Cascade (17-1), Northeast Goose Lake (18-2), Anamosa (13-5) and Monticello (14-5).
By the way, Cascade and Northeast play Tuesday night.
The other No. 1s remain the same. In Class 4A, Pleasant Valley (17-0) is the only remaining undefeated team and is first, followed by Iowa City West (14-3), Des Moines Hoover (15-1), West Des Moines Dowling (18-2) and Ankeny (15-3).
West Des Moines Valley (15-2) is seventh, dropping three spots after its second straight loss, 69-58, last week to Ankeny.
There are no undefeated teams in Class 3A. Pella (16-1) is No. 1, with Dubuque Wahlert and Cedar Rapids Xavier (13-4) second and third, flip-flopping from last week. Xavier lost twice, including to Iowa City West, without injured point guard Matt Mims.
In Class 1A, West Fork (19-0) remains a solid No. 1, with Colo-NESCO (18-1), Gladbrook-Reinbeck (17-2), Jesup 17-2 and Boyden-Hull (17-2) second through fifth, respectively.
Grand View Christian (19-0) of Des Moines is the other unbeaten team in the class and is sixth. Danville (19-1) was eliminated from the undefeated ranks last week, losing to a school from Illinois, and fell from fourth to eighth.
There will be one more Gazette poll for Class 1A and 2A next week. There are two remaining polls for Class 3A and 4A.
