Friday's high school basketball roundup: City High teams pick up big wins over Cedar Falls

5A No. 3 Iowa City High 63, 5A No. 1 Cedar Falls 57

Third-ranked Iowa City High took down the No. 1 team in Class 5A, topping Cedar Falls, 63-57, on the road.

Iowa City High (3-0) led 44-43 going into the final quarter. Ashley Joens had 28 points, including 19 of 23 at the foul line.

Paige Rocca added 10 points and Rose Nkumu had nine points.

Emerson Green led Cedar Falls (3-1) with 18 points. Kiana Barney added 16 points. Kamryn Finley and Cynthia Wolf both fouled out.

4A No. 1 Marion 85, Williamsburg 19

The top-ranked Indians cruised to a Wamac win in Marion.

Chloe Rice led four players in double figures with 13 points. Leah Van Weelden and Riley Wright each added 12 points, and Kayba Laube had 11 points.

Marion (5-0) led 45-6 at halftime.

Charlotte Wetjen and Lizzy Donohoe each had five points for Williamsburg (1-5).

2A No. 6 Iowa City Regina 80, West Liberty 28

The Comets broke a 32-game losing streak earlier this week, but the sixth-ranked Regals forced them to start a new one in Iowa City.

Regina (3-2) hit 12 3-pointers and led at halftime, 57-16.

Kennedy Wallace had 19 points and Alex Wiese and Maeve Dunne each added 14 points.

Macy Akers led West Liberty (1-4) with 10 points.

Cedar Valley Christian 45, Clinton Prince of Peace 25

The Huskies held the Irish to just eight field goals in Springville.

Molly Hembera had 14 points and Maggie Cach added 12 points for Cedar Valley Christian (3-2).

Anabel Blunt had 10 points for Prince of Peace (0-5).

4A No. 13 Cedar Rapids Xavier 62, Linn-Mar 54

You never know how you're going to react after you get beat badly. In Cedar Rapids Xavier's case, that turned out to be pretty good.

The Saints got 18 points apiece from Emily Jasper and Caitlynn Daniels and overcame Linn-Mar, 62-54, in the girls' portion of a girl-boy prep basketball double-header Friday night at Xavier's Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Xavier (4-3) was coming off back-to-back lopsided losses to Iowa City West and Cedar Falls, both top-five teams in Class 5A. This was a recovery victory.

5A No. 13 Cedar Rapids Prairie 72, Cedar Rapids Washington 57

They are three of a kind, with varied identities.

'Mallory (McDermott), she's a scorer. She likes to shoot, and she probably gets away with more bad shots,' Cedar Rapids Prairie girls' basketball coach Josh Bentley said.

'Sarah (Schmitt) is a slasher, a driver, and when you take that away, she can shoot from outside. Sid (McCrea) is the cerebral one. She's the brains of the operation.'

The scorer, the slasher and the cerebral one combined for 64 points as Class 5A 13th-ranked Prairie outran Cedar Rapids Washington, 72-57, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle Friday night at Washington High School.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy 48, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 27

Kennedy junior post Auddie Alepra came out strong with eight first-quarter points as the Cougars stifled Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 48-27, Friday night at Jefferson High School.

'I thought our defense was as good as it has been all year,' Kennedy Coach Tony Vis said. 'Our help side was really good, then I thought we hedged really well with each other. Communication piece was good. Any time you can hold a team under 30, you've got to be happy with your defensive execution.'

Iowa City High 63, 4A No. 3 Cedar Falls 57

The Little Hawks upset the third-ranked Tigers at home

Cedar Falls (2-1) led at the half, 31-30.

Ry Threlkeld-Weigand led Iowa City High (1-1) with 18 points and Keshawn Christian added 16 points. The Little Hawks had eight 3-pointers, with four from Threlkeld-Weigand.

Clinton Prince of Peace 71, Cedar Valley Christian 27

The Huskies got behind 17-6 after one quarter and never caught up in Springville.

Kyle Gustafson had 14 points for Cedar Valley Christian (1-3).

Kaidion Larson and Patrick Mulholland each had 14 points for Prince of Peace (2-2).

4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Prairie 62, Cedar Rapids Washington 47

Kris Murray had 17 points to lead No. 8 Cedar Rapids Prairie (2-0) at home.

Cedar Rapids Washington fell to 1-2.

3A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 60, 4A No. 7 Linn-Mar 39

Linn-Mar led Cedar Rapids Xavier by three points after the first quarter Friday night.

The crowd on both sides of a packed Ron Thillen Gymnasium was super charged. It was an electric atmosphere, one usually reserved for the postseason.

Then the second quarter began, and Jackson Joens hit a 3-pointer for the Saints. Matt Mims followed with an and-one three-point play, Joens hit another trey, and another. The rout was on, suddenly and unexpectedly.

Jack Wetzel looked perfectly at ease in a high-pressure situation.

Faced with a late-game deficit, the Cedar Rapids Kennedy sophomore drilled a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left in overtime as the Cougars rallied past Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 59-58, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys' basketball opener Friday night at Jefferson.
