Field events carry Kennedy

CEDAR RAPIDS - When you're talking boys' track and field at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, don't forget the 'field.”
The Cougars racked up 60 field-event points, and - despite not winning a single event on the track - claimed the championship of their own Draxton-Stiers/Wilkinson Invitational on Saturday at Kingston Stadium.
'We emphasize (the field events), for one,” said Kennedy Coach Curt Pakkebier. 'And we have talent in those events. You can't substitute talent.”
Dalles Jacobus swept the throwing events with efforts of 51 feet, 10 1/2 inches in the shot put and 154-10 in the discus. Jay Blank won the long jump with a leap of 21-3, and Willie Rhoads earned second-place finishes in both jumps.
Linn-Mar won eight events on the track, but Kennedy's 60-7 advantage in the field events carried the Cougars to a 145.5-134 edge overall.
When it was over, the Cougars gathered in the southwest corner of the infield as former coach Al Stiers, a partial namesake for this meet, provided a pep talk.
'I'm so, so proud of you boys,” Stiers said.
Pakkebier said, '(Stiers) is a big part of where this program is. He was a part of this program for 15 years. I'm glad we were able to include him today.”
Linn-Mar won four relays, and got a 1-2 finish from the Murphy brothers in the 3,200-meter run. Daniel, a senior, ran in 9:39.62; Ryan, a sophomore, followed in 9:40.12.
'We just tried to hit consistently in the 71s,” Daniel said. 'I can always feel (Ryan) during practices. I'm glad he's right there ... but I don't want him beating me.”
The elder Murphy plans to make a college decision in the next few days. Iowa and Minnesota are at the top of his list.
Austin Flieder provided another highlight for the Lions, motoring through the 400 in 49.45 seconds.
Josh Yeager anchored Center Point-Urbana from behind in the 3,200 relay with a 1:56.1 split. The Stormin' Pointers ran in 8:07.35, which ranks No. 3 in the state in all classes.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson split up its top-flight girls' sprint relays somewhat in an effort to maximize points, and it paid off.
The J-Hawks led the girls' field with 156 points. Cedar Falls was second with 116.
Jefferson won eight events. Abilene Ranschau was a four-event champion, capturing the 100-meter hurdles and running on three winning relays.
Jasmine Blue won the 100 (12.22) and 200 (26.14) before running a leg on the J-Hawks' 800-meter relay that lowered the 2015 state best to 48.38 seconds.
'I love the open events, and I was glad I got to do two today,” Blue said. 'Running an open kind of takes the pressure off. You just have to worry about yourself and run. I'm really glad Lucy (Schneekloth) and I went 1-2 in the 100. We really push each other.”
The J-Hawks' reward for the team title was a workout in the weight room afterward.
Kennedy's Katie Beer swept the girls' jumps; Cedar Rapids Prairie's Hannah Frazee claimed the 1,500 and 3,000.
