Dowling, Waukee 1-2 heading into 4A showdown

Four classes will contain top-five football battles Friday night.

Headlined by the 1-vs.-2 battle in Class 4A between West Des Moines Dowling and Waukee, showdowns abound in Week 3.

The weekly Gazette/KCRG/KGYM football poll was released Monday afternoon. All the No. 1 teams remained the same.

Dowling, which ripped Urbandale, 49-0, last week, remains on top in Class 4A. The other top teams are Pella (3A), New Hampton (2A), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (1A), Maquoketa Valley (Class A) and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (Eight Man).

But the big story around the poll revolves about what's coming Friday.

In addition to the big game in Central Iowa, there's a Class 3A showdown at Saints Field, where No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier (1-1) hosts No. 3 Solon (2-0) in the first meeting between traditional powers now located in the same district (3A District 4).

Elsewhere, Fort Dodge St. Edmond (2-0) is at Manson-Northwest Webster (2-0) in a game that pits the top-rated team in Class 1A against No. 4, and Class A No. 2 Council Bluffs St. Albert (2-0) visits No. 5 Logan-Magnolia (2-0).

Xavier is one of three ranked Metro teams. Cedar Rapids Washington (2-0) moved into a tie for the No. 3 spot in Class 4A while Linn-Mar - a year removed from a 2-7 campaign - jumped into the 4A list at No. 10 after beating Pleasant Valley to move to 2-0.
