FORT DODGE - Center Point-Urbana waited a while for its first hit. But when it came, it was a long one.
Maddie Karr crushed a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and CPU went on to defeat Spirit Lake, 5-2, in a Class 3A consolation semifinal at the state softball tournament Tuesday morning at the Rogers Sports Complex.
The Stormin' Pointers (29-10) face Mid-Prairie (26-11) in the fifth-place game at noon Wednesday. The Golden Hawks beat West Burlington-Notre Dame, 5-2.
CPU scored two more runs in the fifth - one on an error, another on Claire Chandler's RBI single - and another in the sixth. The Stormin' Pointers finished with just two hits.
Croghan (17-8) scattered six hits, striking out 12. The Indians (23-10) scored their two runs in the seventh.
MID-PRAIRIE 5, WEST BURLINGTON-NOTRE DAME 2
The Golden Hawks scored five times in the fifth inning, all with two outs, to erase a 1-0 deficit.
Ashley Sojka's single scored Amanda Miller to tie it at 1-1, then a bases-loaded walk gave Mid-Prairie the lead.
The big hit came from Chelsea Kral, a two-run single. A wild pitch accounted for the final run.
