CEDAR RAPIDS - When people think about Cedar Rapids Xavier soccer, images of state titles, Mississippi Valley Conference awards and athlete of the week features may come to mind.
The image of 30 or so girls running around the soccer field at 10 a.m., wearing tennis shoes instead of cleats, and winning prizes for games such as 'Power Finesse” or 'World Cup” is not the image that comes to mind.
But Coach Emily Moses and nearly 30 Xavier girls are doing just that when participating in Xavier's girls' Intramural Soccer Club.
Three years ago, Moses started a club for those who wanted to spend time playing the sport in a less competitive environment. Intramural soccer meets Saturday mornings at Xavier in April and May. The club offers a social environment for people who want to have fun with friends or play laid back games of soccer.
'Little by little we are integrating different activities, like intramural soccer, that keep me connected to the sport that I am most passionate about,” Moses said.
The only requirement to join the club is a small fee for a T-shirt and registration.
'No one really took it seriously, but it was nice to have something to do and just hang out with people,” sophomore Eva Deegan said.
There are all different types of people involved, each having different skills and experience levels. The club gives people an opportunity to connect through physical and social activity.
'No matter what you are passionate about, find some way to stay connected to that throughout your life,” Moses said.
