Clark, Daniels named MVC Players of the Year

For the second straight year, Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Zach Daniels received Mississippi Valley Conference divisional player of the year honors.

Daniels was named MVC Valley Division Athlete of the Year and Cedar Rapids Prairie's Cal Clark was selected as MVC Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year the conference announced Thursday.

Daniels, a senior all-stater who will continue his baseball career at the University of Iowa, helped lead the Cougars to the state tournament. Daniels is hitting .523 with 68 hits, including 19 doubles, five triples and two home runs, so far this season. He also posted a 4-1 pitching record with a 2.60 earned-run average, striking out 49 batters in 43 innings.

Clark batted second for the Hawks, who set a school record with 31 wins and were a win away from the state tournament. Clark led the MVC Mississippi with a .448 batting average. Clark, a junior, tallied 52 hits with 30 RBIs. Clark had a .522 on-base percentage.

Prairie Coach Todd Rima was named MVC Mississippi Coach of the Year, while Cedar Rapids Jefferson Coach Kyle Rodenkirk received the honor in the MVC Valley Division.

Clark was one of four Hawks on the Mississippi Division first-team, joining pitcher Drew Yanecek, first baseman Nic Mougin and senior outfielder Trey Beckman. Clark, Mougin and Beckman were chosen unanimously

Iowa City High catcher Nick Sueppel, Dubuque Hempstead's Evan Kolker and Cole Muehring and Waterloo East's John Magnuson were unanimous selections for the Mississippi Division's first team.

The Cougars tied Jefferson and Iowa City West with three first-team picks in the Valley Division. In addition to Daniels, utility player Sammy Lizarraga and outfielder Tyler Dralle, a unanimous vote, earned first-team honors. Jefferson's Spencer Van Scoyoc was a unanimous pick, as a pitcher. The J-Hawks' Lucas Larson was the unanimous choice at shortstop and teammate Colton Knox earned the nod at first baseman. Trojans pitcher Austin Miller, infielder Izaya Ono-Fullard and center fielder Kevin DeLaney were unanimous picks, helping lead West back to the Class 4A state tournament.

Linn-Mar all-stater Manny Jeffery was a unanimous pick as an outfielder.
