Cedar Rapids Invitational: City High’s Ford Washburn edges Marion’s Shane Erb, in record time
Both run under 15:30 in a sizzling boys race at the Cedar Rapids Invitational cross country meet

CEDAR RAPIDS — Ford Washburn and Shane Erb pushed each other to a record run.
“Oh, yeah,” said Washburn, a junior at Iowa City High. “It felt really fast.”
It was. The fastest anybody had ever run a high school boys’ race at Seminole Valley Park.
Washburn blazed to a course record in 15 minutes, 27 seconds, and Erb — a senior from Marion — followed him home in 15:29 at the Cedar Rapids Invitational cross country meet Thursday afternoon.
The old standard was 15:39, established by Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Tyson Van Draska at the 2015 state-qualifying meet.
“That was a really good race,” Washburn said. “He pushed me really hard the whole way.
“I think (Erb) was the guy who beat me in the 1,600 at our home meet during track season. I didn’t want to let him outkick me again.”
Yeah, that was Erb. Distance guys have good memories.
“Ford has a deadly kick,” Erb said. “I knew he was coming.
“This course is very fast, very flat. There aren’t many like it. But to put up a time like that, I knew I had it in me.”
Washburn and Erb ran side by side most of the way. Washburn glanced at his watch at the 2-mile mark, and it read 9:55.
“I almost set a 2-mile PR,” he said.
City High has the potential for a special season, this year and next. The Little Hawks had five runners in the top eight; Truman Thompson, Noah Carey, Ammon Smith and Parker Max finished 5-6-7-8.
Like Washburn, Thompson, Carey and Smith are juniors. Max is a senior.
Is this a Class 4A state-title contender?
“Yes, sir,” Washburn said.
City High scored 27 points and was followed by Marion (57) and Cedar Rapids Prairie (81). Marion’s Jedidah Osgood was third in 16:06.
Iowa City West prevailed in a balanced girls’ race, tallying 102 points. Led by individual champion Ashlyn Keeney, Iowa City Liberty was second with 110, followed by North Scott (117), Prairie (129) and Marion (140).
Keeney got out from the pack immediately and won in 18:14.
“I think that’s faster than I ran all of last year,” she said. “I’m pretty happy with that.
“The last couple of years, I’ve had some rough patches. But today gave me my confidence back.”
She dealt with hip and shin pain during the track season. And there was that eye infection in 2019.
You wouldn’t have known about the eye thing Thursday. She went with contacts instead of glasses.
“The doctor allows me to wear contacts once a month, so today was the day,” Keeney said. “The glasses had been sliding on my face.”
Keeney said Iowa State, Iowa and Oklahoma State are among her top choices for colleges, and that she will begin official visits soon. She won by 47 seconds Thursday over runner-up Hannah Ford of Davenport Central.
West was led by a 6-9-18 finish from Cindy Wang, Gabby Moniza and Annie Schwartz.
Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Lourdes Mason and Gabby Cortez were third and fifth; Liberty’s Cori Mac was fourth.
