IOWA CITY — Minor details can produce major benefits.
With an emphasis on the basics in the top position, Iowa City High watched the little things turn into a big victory.
The Little Hawks posted a big advantage in nearfall points and recorded six pins in a 47-21 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Thursday night at home.
City High (10-4) took a page from the book of head coach Cory Connell, who had 26 falls including 12 straight, during his state title season for the Little Hawks in 2000.
'I think guys bought into doing the little things right,' Connell said. 'If we do the little things right, it adds up to big points.'
Team points piled up fast early as City High won the first five weights. Garrett Bormann and Ethan Wood-Finley opened the dual with consecutive pins at 106 and 113 pounds, respectively.
Joey Harney (132) provided the third fall and gave City High a lead for good with a 26-0 edge. Harney, ranked 10th, pinned Colten Mastin in 2:31. The lower weights set the tone and Harney wanted to follow suit.
'I want to be there with my team getting pins,' Harney said. 'It helps to build that lead.'
Harney led 5-2 after the first, scoring a takedown and two nearfall first. Mastin's reversal was Jefferson's first score that wasn't an escape, ending a 12:42 stretch. It also woke up Harney.
'I knew I had to get going,' Harney said. 'I wanted to work on my offense and get some points.'
City High received pins from Wilfred Kadohoa (152), sixth-ranked Jacob Dykes at 195 and third-ranked 220-pounder Jordain Buckland. Lance Bormann added a technical fall at 126, tallying 12 nearfall points and helping the Little Hawks own a 23-3 edge in back points.
'I think they wrestled where they are best and understood where they are best,' Connell said about the nine City High winners. 'They put a lot of points on the scoreboard. It's fun to watch them."
Jefferson (3-3) won five matches, including pins from Zach Main (138) and Tyreese Smith at 160. Matt Culver and Tavian Rashed followed Smith with decisions and ninth-ranked heavyweight David Bonner capped the dual with a victory.
