Central City romps past Springville

Jul. 8, 2015 10:11 pm
CENTRAL CITY - Don't get Veronica Coghlan wrong. She has complete confidence in this team, but understands the perspective of outsiders.
'Other than us, nobody expects this,” Coghlan said. 'We will still be viewed as underdogs until we really do something big.”
Something like ... ?
'Like going to state.”
The Wildcats got a step closer Wednesday night, erupting for nine runs in the top of the third inning and romping past Springville, 14-1, in a four-inning Class 1A regional softball quarterfinal at Central City High School.
Central City (27-9) advances to face No. 8 Bellevue Marquette (28-5) on Friday in Bellevue. The Mohawks downed Calamus-Wheatland, 2-0, Wednesday.
A game that figured to be a toss-up was anything but.
'My dad was telling me he was nervous,” Coghlan said. 'I wasn't nervous at all.”
The rubber match after a regular-season split, it was 1-1 through two innings, then the Wildcats sent 14 batters to the plate in a long, prosperous rally in the third. With one out, the next seven batters reached base.
It started with back-to-back doubles by Coghlan and Madi Pavlis that broke the tie. Three walks and an error followed, then Sydney Kramer hit a two-run single and Annie Detweiler followed with a two-run double to make it 8-1. RBI singles by Coghlan and Pavlis concluded the avalanche.
'We prepared very hard for this game,” Central City Coach Dave Johnson said. 'We made adjustments to their first pitcher (Olivia Dlouhy), then we were able to sqaure up against the second one (Kylie Mysak).”
Kailey Tyne (16-5) pitched a one-hitter, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters she faced. She also rapped a two-run single in the top of the fourth that allowed the Wildcats to put the game away early.
Kramer, Coghlan and Tyne each reached base in all four of their plate appearances. Kramer was 2-for-2 with two walks, scored twice and drove in two.
'I was just looking to get on base and getting the pitches I wanted,” she said.
Coghlan was 3-for-3 with a walk, scored three times and drove in a pair. Tyne singled once and walked three times,
Springville retired at 21-21.
