Cedar Rapids Xavier, Decorah, Iowa City West earn home paths in new Iowa girls’ tennis state format

CEDAR RAPIDS — The format has changed along with the season for girls’ tennis in Iowa.

With the move to the fall, the regional tournaments, which begin on Sept. 20 and conclude Sept. 27 with regional finals, will not be followed by first-round state tournament matches at local sites throughout the state.

For the first time, the state team tournament will be a two-day, eight-team event in each class.

For three area schools — Cedar Rapids Xavier and Decorah in 1A and Iowa City West in 2A — the path to state will be nothing but home matches in the brackets released Friday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Xavier and Decorah have been ranked 1-2 all season. Both teams are slated to host in all three rounds in 1A. West, ranked No. 5 in 2A, got a bye and would have to win a pair of duals to make it to state.

None of the three teams have another top-10 ranked team in their brackets.

State tournament play is set for Oct. 6-7. Pella High School will host the 1A meet with 2A play being held at Waukee Northwest.
