SANTA CLARE, Calif. — Mason Turner and Parker Macho of the Eastern Iowa Swimming Federation (EISF) swim club in Cedar Rapids won gold at the 2018 Speedo Short Course Far Western Championships.
The swimmers competed among 1,700 other from around the U.S.
Ellie Hance (age 11), Mason Turner (11) and Parker Macho (age 10) attended the meet with Coaches Megan Oesting and Kerry Carleton.
Turner, 11, won the boys' 11-12 1,650-yard (mile) freestyle in a time of 17:14.02, setting an Iowa state record. Turner broke another Iowa record in the 500 freestyle, clocking 4:53.14 and placing second. In his third state-record-setting swim, Turner swam a 2:05.41 in the 200 butterfly, placing second again. Turner also won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:17.25.
Macho, 10, finished second in individual high point for age 10-and-under at the meet. He finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:02.97), 100 freestyle (57.19), 500 freestyle (5:24.86) and 200 individual medley (2:19.11), and second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.49). He broke his own state record in the 500 free.
'When we came out here last year, our kids were wide-eyed and a bit in awe of just how much faster this group of swimmers is compared to what they face locally,' Coach Megan Oesting said. 'This year they knew what to expect and rose to the occasion. The kids were not intimidated at all, even swimming against kids a year older, almost a foot taller and 20 pounds stronger. We came in and beat the west coast's untouchables and now I think they can take on anyone they want.'
