Mar. 7, 2017 4:49 pm
DES MOINES — Atlantic tried to take away Austin Phyfe, but top-seeded Waverly-Shell is more than just the Northern Iowa signee.
That was proven true Tuesday afternoon in the Go-Hawks' 58-45 win in a boys' state basketball tournament Class 3A quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena.
Waverly-Shell Rock (23-1) had nine players score, building a 21-9 lead after a quarter and moving along from there. Phyfe, the 6-foot-10 center, still led the Go-Hawks with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
He also added three assists and three steals.
Garrett Franken, a Division I signee at North Dakota, had 21 ponts to lead Atlantic (18-6). The Trojans shot just 35 percent in the game.
PELLA CHRISTIAN 52, VAN METER 49 (OT) — Alex Pringle scored 18 points and Levi Jungling added 12 as second-seeded Pella Christian survived in overtime.
The Eagles beat Van Meter in the regular season, 61-53, but this was a much tighter game. Van Meter (23-2) led at halftime, 20-14, but had to get a 3-pointer from Blake Fryar with 19 seconds left in regulation to send the game to an extra four minutes.
Ian Abrahamson led the Bulldogs with 12 points off the bench.
CARROLL KUEMPER 51, GARNER-HAYFIELD-VENTURA 31 — Center Matt Dentlinger scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Kuemper (23-2) won handily.
A 20-2 second-quarter edge put the Knights over the top, giving them a 29-10 halftime lead. Sam Auen added 11 points for Kuemper and Jared Tigges 10.
Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (23-2) got a team-high 11 points from Ryan Meyers. The Cardinals shot just 31 percent from the field.
