IOWA CITY — An unofficial visit turned into an oral commitment Sunday night for Ashley Joens.
A junior at Iowa City High, Joens committed to the Iowa State University women's basketball team after the Cyclones' win over Drake.
'I had been on a couple visits already, and I felt that this was somewhere I could see myself,' Joens said Monday afternoon. 'I wanted to stay close to home, and I was really impressed with their coaching staff.'
A 5-foot-11 guard and a Class 5A first-team all-state selection, Joens averaged 19.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season as the Little Hawks went 19-4. She is the 16th-ranked junior in the nation, according to ESPN.com.
Joens' older sister, Courtney, is a freshman at the University of Illinois. Ashley considered the Fighting Illini as well, along with Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and DePaul.
