All-state baseball 2017: Beckman's Riley LeGrand captain of INA Class 2A team

Aug. 1, 2017 1:16 am
CEDAR RAPIDS — Riley LeGrand was just grand for Team Jenk this season and has been rewarded for it.
The senior infielder from Dyersville Beckman is the captain of the Class 2A all-state baseball team, it has been announced. The all-state teams are sponsored by the Iowa Newspaper Association.
LeGrand helped the Blazers win the Class 2A championship this past weekend and is a two-time all-state pick. He hit .500 with seven triples, two home runs, 20 RBIs and 43 runs scored.
He was joined on the 2A all-state first team by teammate Jackson Bennett, a pitcher who picked up the win in the 9-6 title game win over Carroll Kuemper. Bennett, a junior, was 8-0 with a 0.97 earned run average.
Other 2A first-teamers are Iowa City Regina pitcher Ryan Schooley, Monticello first baseman Jacob Manternach and Cascade outfielder Bryce Simon.
Ten other players from the Gazette area also are first-team all-staters.
That includes three guys from Iowa City West in Class 4A: pitcher Braden Houston, outfielder Connor McCaffery and third baseman Izaya Ono-Fullard. Houston went 9-1 with a 0.89 ERA this season, while McCaffery and Ono-Fullard combined for 17 home runs and 101 RBIs.
West lost in the state tournament semifinals. Ono-Fullard will play collegiately at Kirkwood Community College, McCaffery at Iowa.
Iowa City High's Brett McCleary also is on the first team as a utility player, as are Metro players Levi Usher (Cedar Rapids Prairie), Matt Berst (Cedar Rapids Kennedy) and Brayden Frazier (Cedar Rapids Jefferson). Outfielder Usher is the lone junior here, hitting .468 this season and being invited to play in this month's Perfect Game USA All-American Game in San Diego.
Catcher Berst decided last week to play for Iowa. Frazier, a junior, has committed to play for the Hawkeyes.
The lone first-teamer in Class 3A is Vinton-Shellsburg senior catcher Will Edwards. He hit .405 with 33 stolen bases.
Linn County underclassmen Austin Krob of Lisbon and Jake Hilmer and Ryan Miller of North Linn are first-team selections in 1A. Junior Krob helped his team make the state tournament by hitting .407 with a team-high 46 RBIs.
Hilmer and Miller led North Linn to state for the second time in three years. Hilmer hit an amazing .510 but is honored as a pitcher, where he went 11-0 with a 0.60 ERA.
Miller, picked as an outfielder, hit .406 with 11 triples and 49 stolen bases.
