3rd-quarter surge lifts Maquoketa Valley

CEDAR RAPIDS — After a dead-even first half, one run was all it took.

Maquoketa Valley stung Interstate-35 with a 12-1 spurt to start the second half and topped the Roadrunners, 48-35, as part of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Brianna Mensen scored 26 points as the Wildcats improved to 9-3.

The first half was close throughout and ended in a 24-24 deadlock. but the Wildcats pulled away in the first three minutes of the third quarter, and I-35 (6-4) never got closer than eight points again.

Payton Ries added 14 points for the Wildcats.

Gracey Griglione paced I-35 with 15 points. Slye Richardson added 10.
