SOLON — Two games in, both against highly-ranked opponents with potent offenses, and nary a point surrendered.
It's safe to say Solon football is rolling into district play.
Junior tailback Hunter Kula bouned back from an early turnover with 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Class 3A No. 10 Spartans used a 27-point second quarter and routed 1A No. 1 Iowa City Regina, 33-0, Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
'We like to think we play hard and pretty tough and disciplined within our schemes,' Solon Coach Kevin Miller said. 'I thought tonight we did that, especially on defense.'
Solon (2-0) blanked then-2A No. 2 Mount Vernon last week in another rivalry game, 19-0.
After a scoreless first quarter with Regina, the Spartans broke through with a six-play, 74-yard drive capped by an 18-yard Kula TD scamper.
'We just came back out stronger,' Kula said. 'We started to see they were getting tired, so we just punched it right up the gut.'
A quick Regina punt put Kula and the Spartans on the move again. Solon converted two 4th-down conversions on a 76-yard drive, the second of which was a two-yard swing pass from quarterback Cam Miller to Coal Flansburg for a 14-0 lead.
On Regina's first play of the ensuing possession, Solon defensive back Jack Stahle deflected a Michael Conlon pass into the arms of teammate Adam Bock, and the linebacker raced 28 yards to the right corner of the end zone and the rout was on, 20-0.
'Our two inside linebackers are pretty good players,' Miller said. 'Those guys are pretty stout inside.'
The 5-foot-6 Kula used his height to his advantage with a blinding 79-yard TD run just 30 seconds before halftime.
'It helps me hide behind my line,' Kula said. 'Then I just pop out and they don't even know I'm coming.'
Miller finished with 126 yards passing and two touchdowns, plus 54 yards on the ground as the Spartans totaled 406 yards as a team. Ben Krutzfeldt caught four passes for 107 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Iowa commit Tyler Linderbaum blocked two punts for the Spartans, and helped limit Regina to 112 total yards.
Isaac Vollstedt ran for 51 yards for Iowa City Regina (0-2), which has now lost three-straight games dating back to last season's 1A state championship game. The Regals stuffed Solon last year, 34-0.
'They've got a great football team,' Regina Coach Marv Cook said. 'They get after it. They play physical. We've got a lot of work ahead of us.'
Solon opens the 3A-5 slate next week at Keokuk, while Regina hosts Wapello.
