14 area boys’ soccer players named first team all-state

Fourteen Gazette-area boys' soccer players earned first-team honors on the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association's all-state teams, released Monday.
In Class 3A, seniors Ben Johnson of Linn-Mar and Iowa City High's Adam Nicholson were selected to the first team. along with Cedar Rapids Prairie junior Seth Rinderknecht. Johnson had 19 goals and 14 assists to lead the Lions to the state championship. Nicholson scored 11 times for the Little Hawks in a 16-4 season that ended in the state tournament. Rinderknecht had eight goals and six assists, helping Prairie to its first state tournament berth.
Seniors Connor Ramlo of Cedar Rapids Xavier, Adrian Castanon of South Tama and Jon Jacobson of Clear Creek-Amana were selected to the Class 2A first team. Ramlo led the Saints with 14 goals and 22 assists this season, helping them to their seventh state championship after a 1-0 victory over DeWitt Central. Castanon scored an impressive 30 goals this year with 25 assists as South Tama advanced to the state semifinals before losing to DeWitt Central. Jacobson had 14 goals as Clear-Creek Amana ended the season at 11-7.
Eight area players were selected to Class 1A first team, including Joey Philipp of Cedar Valley Christian. Andrew West from Solon, Carter Boekholder of Dyersville Beckman, Jordan Ulin from Mid-Prairie, Emilio Tovar and Michael Adam of Iowa City Regina and Evan Moeller and Hunter Hermsen of Benton Community.
Boekholder led Beckman to the Class 1A state championship, scoring 20 goals. Tovar scored 19 goals for Regina and Adam had 12 goals and 10 assists. Regina lost in the first round of the tournament to Gilbert, ending with an 11-7 record. Moeller scored 19 goals for Benton, which ended the season at 16-5. Philipp had 14 goals and seven assists and Ulin scored 10 times with two assists.
