VIDEO: Stanzi says he's up to 230 (not so fast on the recruit)
Marc Morehouse
Aug. 11, 2009 6:06 pm
I've been freaking out all week thinking I didn't hear Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi correctly when he said he weighs 230.
Last year, after his shoulder injury in July, he lost some weight. He wasn't able to work out and he dropped to 210. Now, with a full season of weights, he comes into 2009 at 230 pounds. Check it at the 7:00 mark.
Other topics we covered (and because this vid is long, I'm going to give you what was said and when -- as I should always be doing anyway):
0 to :17 -- Beard (he's got a "Shaggy")
:24 to 57 -- What it takes to be a better player this year
:57 to 1:35 -- Did the game slow down?
1:35 to 2:00 -- Something about reads
2:00 to 2:20 -- Checkoff more?
2:20 to 2:55 -- QB can't be "aw shucks"
2:55 to 3:45 -- Made mistakes last season, but team still won
3:45 to 4:32 -- The concept of QB as "game manager"
4:32 to 5:04 -- Concept of "game changer" (or whatever you want to call it)
6:02 to 7:15 -- On how he is physically this year compared to last (he said he weighs 230, almost Nathan Chanlder-esque)
Hawkeye thought of the day -- The recruiting website FlaVarsity.com (a Florida prep service) reported Tuesday afternoon that Iowa received a commitment from Trinity Catholic (Ocala, Fla.) RB Kedrick Rhodes, a 5-10, 175-pounder.
Not so fast, my friend.
FlaVarsity.com reported the commitment before Rhodes, who has offers from Kansas State, Northwestern and Florida International, publicly announced, according to the Press-Citizen's Andy Hamilton (link here). He is leaning toward Iowa and is planning a visit, but isn't officially committed, as official as oral commits in August can be.
Last season, he rushed for 1,710 yards and 17 TDS, leading the Celtics to the Class 2B state finals. Rivals.com ranks him No. 65 among Florida preps.
Iowa has 10 commitments for 2010 class. I thought this was a little early for an RB commit. Cedar Rapids Washington's Andre Dawson is a target of Iowa's. The Gazette's Jeff Linder had a short update on Dawson last month.
Anyway, here's what Iowa could get in Rhodes.
Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga was named to the Outland Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced today.
Bulaga, a 6-6, 315-pounder from Crystal Lake, Ill., is a two-time letterman after playing as a true freshman in 2007. He was named to the 2008 coach's second all-Big Ten team and to last year's College Football News second sophomore all-America squad.
Bulaga is one of only four Big Ten players named to the watch list. Penn State has two players on the list and Illinois one.
The Outland Trophy is the third oldest award in college football. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show on Dec. 10.
Three Iowa players have previously won the Outland Trophy. They are Robert Gallery (2203), Alex Karras (1957) and Calvin Jones (1955).
Big Ten thought of the day -- The Big Ten Network's football tour makes its first stop tonight in Columbus. The show airs at 9 p.m. central.
Video can be viewed here. The BTN also has a very active Twitter voice. Check the TwitVid stuff out here.
Penn State is up next (Thursday).
The Daily Herald's Lindsey Willhite spent Monday in Northwestern's camp. The Gophers are sweating out an injury on the D-line, writes the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Marcus Fuller.
National thought of the day -- Out of the klink and onto the field at Michigan State.

suck from the SEC. "Protection of online rights" makes good people do dumb things.
