VIDEO: Iowa shocks Penn State, wins first Big Ten game
Jan. 16, 2010 11:57 am
Iowa earned its first Big Ten win this season 67-64 over Penn State today.
Aaron Fuller led Iowa with 20 points. Matt Gatens scored 14. Penn State's Talor Battle led all scorers with 31 points.
Both Iowa and Penn State were 0-4 in the Big Ten.
"We didn't just win just because they had a bad game," Iowa guard Eric May said. "I think they played good. We had a good game as a team."
Fuller posted his second straight double-double after scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds, his same numbers in a win against Tennessee State on Tuesday. His previous high before Tuesday was 16 points last year at Penn State.
Here's a first-half account:
Iowa finished the first half with an impressive run to take a 31-28 lead at halftime today against Penn State.
Penn State led 24-13 with 6:20 left in the first half. However, Iowa finished strong on an 18-4 run.
Iowa started poorly, shooting just 2 of 12 from the floor. But the Hawkeyes heated up, hitting 9 of their last 13 shots from the floor. Iowa finished the half shooting 44 percent.
The first half also featured some of Iowa's most impressive possessions this season. Penn State's Bill Edwards stole a pass at mid-court and breezed to a seemingly easy layup. But Iowa's Eric May sprinted toward the basket and blocked the shot. Iowa took over, and Aaron Fuller put it in and was fouled with 3:42 left to cut Penn State's lead to two points.
Penn State's Talor Battle airballed a 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer on the Nittany Lions' next possession. Fuller grabbed the rebound, moved the ball up the court and May drilled a 3-pointer to give Iowa its first lead at 25-24.
Fuller had 10 points and seven rebounds, including five offensive. He also has one steal, one rebound and one turnover.
Battle leads all scorers with 11 points.
