Video: Georgia Tech boasts a rapper, a chef and a Rick James impersonator
Jan. 2, 2010 9:47 am
If anything, Georgia Tech's players are characters. They like to cook, they rap, they imitate each other and they impersonate Rick James (not the real Brickhouse dude, but the version famous by Dave Chappelle).
Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt cooked up 11 victories for the Ramblin' Wreck this year. But that's not all that goes on in his kitchen.
Nesbitt is the team chef, guard Cord Howard said. In fact, Howard said Nesbitt needs a chef hat.
"He's a country guy. He can cook, man," Howard said. "Pork chops. I need to go steal a couple of meals from him. I've walked by his room and smelled fish frying."
Howard said he's jealous of Nesbitt's roommate, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 230 pounds.
"That's why he's a big receiver," Howard said. "He likes to fry pork chops and fish, stuff like that. He eats a lot, and he loves to cook."
If football doesn't work out, Nesbitt might have a future in rapping. He and linebacker Brad Jefferson roomed together as freshmen and have formed their own rap group, and freestyle rapping is their signature focus.
"Yeah, I'll do a little fresstyling," Jefferson said. "I go to Georgia Tech, we're the Ramblin' Wreck ..."
Jefferson clammed up after the opening line. But he didn't hesitate to promote his group.
"Bipolar Entertainment, we're coming at you real soon," he said.
"We don't go to no club, we just stay in our room, get on instrumentals on YouTube and just start freestyling'."
Jefferson and cornerback Mario Butler also like impersonations. Jefferson picks on Thomas but declined to show his off his best stuff.
"I dont' want to embarass him," Jefferson said. "He's trying to (reciprocate), but he can't do one of me."
Butler is even more candid about his knock-off of Rick James. Butler's even got the dreadlocks that resembles Chappelle's epic scenes.
"I always say crazy stuff from Dave Chappelle, and I emulate Rick James from his shows and stuff," Butler said.
You can say this about Georgia Tech's players: they certainly are interesting characters who play hard on the field and have fun off it.
"I think when you play college football, you've got to do a little something that's outside of your box, something that makes you have fun," Butler said. "All during the week, you have to focus on class, schedule and practice. You have to do something that makes you laugh."
"You have to because it's a grind."
