Patience is a virtue, Sherlock Holmes told Dr. Watson, adding "you should learn to cultivate it."
Here are Indiana's records in men's basketball in Tom Crean's first three seasons as head coach:
2008-09: 6-25 overall, 1-17 Big Ten
2009-10: 10-21 overall, 4-14 Big Ten
2010-11: 12-20 overall, 3-15 Big Ten
That's not good. Big NG, in fact.
But this season's Hoosiers are 9-0. They have some players, including a 6-foot-11 freshman named Cody Zeller who makes a difference. Saturday, they enjoyed their biggest win in the Crean era with a 73-72 homecourt win over top-ranked Kentucky on a last-second 3-pointer by Christian Watford.
Saturday night in an intimate setting in South Sioux City, Neb., Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery was on hand to watch two of his 2012 recruiting commitments, point guard Mike Gesell of South Sioux City and center Adam Woodbury of Sioux City East.
Pretty good stuff, eh? But how does this happen at Iowa? Easy. Players.
Iowa doesn't have them yet. Certainly not enough of them. Get some players and it's amazing what can happen. Maybe Fran McCaffery's recruiting class of 2012 will supply the guys who turn things around.
Here's a video from the Sioux City Journal that shows highlights from South Sioux City's 83-71 win over East:
