Tuesday's 10 Insight Bowl factoids
Mike Hlas Dec. 20, 2011 6:58 am
It's 10 days until the Insight Bowl between Iowa and Oklahoma, so here are 10 unrelated, and not necessarily meaningful, facts about the game.
1. Teams from Iowa are 3-0 in Insight Bowls. Iowa State won it in 2000 and 2009, Iowa in 2010. Teams from Minnesota are 0-3 in Insight Bowls. The Gophers lost the game in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
2. Oklahoma passed 191 more times (558) than Iowa (367) this season. Ohio State passed just 222 times. Army and Navy passed a combined 232 times.
3. Texas Tech, which defeated Oklahoma in Norman, was 1-7 against the rest of the Big 12. Minnesota, which defeated Iowa in Minneapolis, was 1-6 against the rest of the Big Ten.
4. Under Bob Stoops, Oklahoma has been No. 1 in the AP poll for 30 weeks and unranked for 28 weeks.
5. Oklahoma freshman quarterback Blake Bell has rushing touchdowns in his last five games. He is 6-foot-6, weighs 245 pounds, and 10 of his 34 carries have gone for touchdowns. He is called the Belldozer.
6. The last five Insight Bowls were Big Ten-Big 12 matchups. The Big 12 won four. The only Big Ten team to win was Iowa.
7. It would be a bigger upset this year if the Hawkeyes beat Oklahoma, but Missouri was ranked No. 12 entering last year's Insight Bowl while Oklahoma is ranked just 19th this year.
8. Oklahoma has allowed only nine quarterback sacks. That's one sack for every 62 passes.
9. Ten Big Ten teams are in bowls. Iowa is one of the seven that are underdogs. Eight Big 12 teams are in bowls. Oklahoma is one of the six that are favorite.
10. Oklahoma's coach is an Iowa graduate. Iowa's coach is a Connecticut graduate. Connecticut's coach (Paul Pasqualoni) is a Penn State graduate. Penn State's interim coach (Tom Bradley) is also a Penn State graduate. You thought it would go full-circle back to Oklahoma, didn't you? But life doesn't always work that way.
