Touted prospect Rashad Vaughn convinced he can outshoot Fred Hoiberg

 AMES - Coveted Class of 2014 basketball recruit Rashad Vaughn remains utterly uncertain of where he'll play college ball.

But there's at least one thing he's sure of.

He's convinced he can outshoot Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg, whose Cyclones he came to see play Michigan while on an official visit Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.

“I smell a little fear in his heart,” Vaughn said, half-jokingly.

Now, Hoiberg never met a shot - or competition - he shrank from, whether as an ISU star who became known as “the Mayor,” or as a NBA long-distance shooting ace for the Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves.

His challenge with Vaughn is convincing the highly-touted Minnesotan who plays for Findlay (Nev.) Prep that Ames is not just a good place to visit when the No. 7 Wolverines are in town, but a fitting final college destination.

““Really, just relationships and where I fit in most,” said Vaughn, a 6-6, 200-pound two guard who in two weeks will take an official vist to UNLV, then North Carolina, then to two other schools. “That's what its going to come down to.”

Vaughn's seen Hilton “magic” before Sunday, but expected it to be in full effect against Michigan.

“Crazy,” Vaughn said. “They're lined up outside; they were out there last night, so it should be a crazy atmosphere.”

Fans also arrived toting poster-sized signs showering praise on Vaughn and other top prospects in attendance.

He looked at the them bemusedly, with a small smile on his face.

Such is life as a top-15 national recruit, who said as of now, he “ probably” has a better relationship with ISU coaches than any others.

“Just playing it by ear,” Vaughn said.
