Tanner Miller -- the last one in
Marc Morehouse
Feb. 2, 2010 4:46 pm
Tanner Miller knows all about the last recruit.
He ticked off a few names Tuesday afternoon. Prairie City-Monroe's Brandon Myers was a final recruit. He's now an Oakland Raider. Marion's Allen Reisner was the final recruit of the 2007 class. He'll start for the Hawkeyes next season.
Miller, a multi-sport athlete for Mid-Prairie High School, looks like the final recruit of the 2010 class. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder visited Iowa over the weekend as a walk-on prospect. He took a phone call from head coach Kirk Ferentz on Monday with an offer for a full scholarship.
"It still hasn't completely hit me," Miller said. "Coach Ferentz called me after our game last night and I told him I was in."
Last fall, Miller rushed for 1,846 yards rushing and scored 23 touchdowns to go along with 64 tackles as a free safety on defense. He's the defending state champion in the Class 2A 400-meter hurdles. He leads Mid-Prairie's basketball team with 18.8 points a game.
Iowa's 2010 class held steady at 20 through last weekend, the final one for recruiting. With the national signing period beginning tomorrow, it looked as if Iowa was going to stick on 20.
The Iowa staff met for two hours before deciding on the offer to Miller. A possible player exit left a scholarship open for Miller, he said.
Unless a letter of intent goes to the fax machine in the Iowa football complex, 21 appears to be the final number.
And that's OK for Miller. He's happy to be in and he's motivated to show he belongs.
"I think the last guy definitely comes in thinking he has something to prove," Miller said. "Maybe you're not highly recruited to begin with, so maybe you do think you have something to prove, show people you can play on that level."
Miller committed to play for coach Mark Farley at Northern Iowa, receiving an 80-percent scholarship. The changed forced him to make a tough phone call to Cedar Falls on Tuesday.
"After all they've done for me and the support they've given me, it was definitely hard," Miller said. "I felt comfortable there, but this is something you can't pass up."
Miller, who moved to Wellman from Nebraska in eighth grade, also comes from good bloodlines. His dad, Brian, and uncle played football at Nebraska, where he also visited as a walk-on candidate.

Tanner Miller signs his letter of intent to play football at the University of Iowa at a ceremony Wednesday morning at the Mid-Prairie High School library in Wellman. At left are Miller's parents, Brian and Raelyn. At right is Mid-Prairie football coach Pete Cavanagh. Miller is the fourth Mid-Prairie football player to attend the University of Iowa on a football scholarship, and the first in more than 20 years. He is also a track standout and says he has not ruled out the possibility of running track at Iowa. (Matt Nelson/KCRG-TV9)
Mid-Prairie's Tanner Miller visited Iowa as a walk-on candidate last weekend. He received a call from Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz on Monday with a scholarship offer. He's Iowa's 21st recruit in the 2010 class. This is Miller winning the Class 2A 400-meter hurdles last May. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)
