Stats, notes, observations and video from Saturday's scrimmage

First off, O-tackle Bryan Bulaga tweaked his right knee in practice Friday, coach Kirk Ferentz said, and sat out Saturday's scrimmage. He ran some sprints and wore a sleeve on the knee. No timetable.
Running back Jewel Hampton tweaked the knee that caught eastern Iowa's attention back in July. Then, it was a strain that scared him, called for an MRI and apparently was nothing serious. Now, he didn't play in Saturday's scrimmage. No timetable. He wore a sleeve on his right knee and wasn't moving well.
Right O-tackle Kyle Calloway has a strained IT band in his right knee. Basically, this is runner's knee. He padded up early and went through 1 on 1s, but he hasn't practiced much. He said in interviews afterward that he'll be fine.
Others not dressed: DL Marty Hopkins, OL Conor Boffeli, RB Brandon Wegher, DL Steve Bigach, WR Colin Sandeman (hammy, said he'll be fine), DB Chris Rowell and DL Scott Covert. TE Tony Moeaki and FB Wade Leppert wore red jerseys. Moeaki isn't hurt, but Ferentz said he isn't interested in seeing him tackled during an August scrimmage.
True freshmen who right now are on a path to the field: WR Keenan Davis (for sure, punt returns, too), WR Jordan Cotton (punt returns), DB Micah Hyde (ran third at RCB), OT Nolan MacMillan (saw some second-team OT, might sit when Bulaga returns), RB Josh Brown (way thicker than I thought) and, probably, Wegher.
Punt return candidates include true freshmen Jordan Cotton, Keenan Davis and Micah Hyde and Paul Chaney Jr.

SACKS
I counted 20 with DE Adrian Clayborn, DE Broderick Binns, DT Karl Klug and LB Bruce Davis with multiple.
FUMBLES
I counted five, four on QB-center exchanges and one from Robinson.
PENALTIES
Saw just one flag, a false start on Moeaki, I believe
STANDOUTS
-- Trey Stross, senior wide receiver, looks healthy and explosive. He had good numbers (4 for 49), but he also did a lot of work in traffic. Very encouraging start for the oft-injured senior.
-- Stanzi played smart, didn't force anything on blitz pickup. If the running game isn't what it was last year -- a decent possibility -- Stanzi should be able to pick up the slack.
-- Vandenberg is the No. 2 QB. During the two-minute drill, the No. 2 unit flopped badly. Vandenberg was given a second chance to make something happen, showing the reps aren't even with him and Wienke.
-- Daniel Murray is the kicker. He has the stronger leg, but sophomore Trent Mossbrucker has clearly improved in that area. Ferentz did say that Mossbrucker could redshirt if he doesn't win the job. The competition is close.
-- WR Paul Chaney Jr. is back after a doghouse season. He didn't get a shot at punt return, though. Thought he'd be a natch there.
-- DE Adrian Clayborn is a nightmare. The bullrush on true freshman Nolan MacMillan was impressive.
-- DT Mike Daniels is a powerhouse. He has the pad level of an armadillo.
-- TE Tony Moeaki is the total package, but junior Allen Reisner has a sweet pair of hands. Very underrated player. I like Brad Herman. Not sure about the speed there, but he's a hungry, aggressive player.
CONCERNS
-- Running back is certainly. No Jewel. He's the No. 1 and the best RB on the team. He has the vision and the decisiveness. Paki played very well Saturday, but Brinson and Robinson were behind finding holes and reading plays. There is a lot of reading to the position. It's just not all straight ahead and head down.
-- O-line is hodge podge with all the injuries. Bulaga, not much more to say. His injury is a big deal. Will he miss time? It's not certain yet, but he did run sprints on Saturday. The lineup is so askew because of injuries (Bulaga, Calloway and Vandervelde) that it's probably not worth discussing the what-ifs.
-- Four fumbles on QB-center exchanges?
-- Punter Ryan Donahue still has the occasional shank. After a 65-yarder that had me asking, "That came from a human?" he cranked one into the bleachers.
-- This right cornerback is going to be a nutty ride until Shaun Prater returns from his two-game suspension. Willie Lowe has speed, but he's smallish. True freshman Micah Hyde looks like he belongs, but he's a little on the thin side. It's probably Prater's job without Bernstine.
Iowa's Jewel Hampton (left) and Jordan Bernstine (right) sit on the sideline during the team's open practice and Kids Day event Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Burnstine is out for the season with an ankle injury he sustained in practice. Hampton sat out of practice with a knee injury that does not appear to be serious. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)
