Siena's McCaffery to Iowa? Boston Globe says ...
Mar. 28, 2010 7:52 am
Siena's Fran McCaffery is the latest coach linked to the Iowa job, according multiple media outlets on Saturday.
Sunday, a story in the Boston Globe said McCaffery is Iowa's leading candidate and could accept the position today.
McCaffery, 50, has led Siena to the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons. Many observers picked Siena to upset Purdue in the first round, but the Boilermakers won 72-64.
Both the Albany Times-Union and ESPN reported McCaffery as a potential finalist. McCaffery served as a Notre Dame assistant for 11 years. His Siena teams have won 27 games in each of the last two seasons.
Here's what FoxSports.com's Jeff Goodman tweeted Saturday afternoon: "I've been told by sources not to discount Fran McCaffery from the equation at Iowa.
Goodman also tweeted: "Source told FOXSports.com that Utah's Jim Boylen no longer in the mix at Iowa.
ESPN's Andy Katz wrote in a blog that Iowa won't wait for Dayton's Brian Gregory to finish his season before hiring a coach. Dayton is in the NIT semifinals, which are held Tuesday in New York City.
If Gregory is "the guy" for Iowa, it would seem strange for Iowa officials not to wait a few more days to chat with him before making a hire. I guess I'd be surprised if Iowa had a inflexible timetable to hire a coach that doesn't include talking to all of the best potential candidates, unless Gregory has no desire to become one.
