Rollins named Iowa's honorary captain for Saturday

IOWA CITY– Former University of Iowa linebacker Vernon Rollins has been named honorary captain for Saturday's game against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Hawkeyes face the Warhawks in a nationally televised game on BTN with kickoff set for 11:01 a.m., in Kinnick Stadium. The game is sold out, which means Iowa has sold out 52 of its last 54 home games.

Rollins was a four-

year letterman (1995-97 & 99). He played on Hawkeye teams that made it to a pair of Sun Bowls and an Alamo Bowl, winning two of the three. Rollins, a 6-3, 242-pound Hackensack, N.J., native, came to Iowa as one of the most heralded prep linebackers in the nation. A knee injury, early in his junior campaign, bothered him the rest of his playing career.

Despite playing only two full seasons, Rollins still ranks among Iowa's all-time tackle leaders with 237 career stops. His 126 tackles as a sophomore (1996) remains high on Iowa's all-time tackle charts for a season. He was named to the all-Big Ten honorable mention unit following his sophomore year with the Hawkeyes. Rollins and his family still reside in the Iowa City area.

Rollins will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room, before and after the game, and on the sidelines during the contest.
