Ring of Honor at Kinnick is a great addition

Aug. 21, 2013 3:04 pm
Every time I've been to a college or NFL stadium that had a ring of honor/wall of honor/whatever they're called, I've stopped and looked at the names and thought about those players.
The seasons all blur after a while. But great games stay vivid in the memory, and there aren't great games without great players. Even the best of the best tend to get forgotten after enough time passes unless there's something to keep their names out there.
While I tend to yawn at a lot of bells and whistles, I think Iowa's decision to put the names of nine former Hawkeyes on the side of the Kinnick Stadium press box is a fine addition. The nine are (with their senior-season uniform number) Aubrey Devine (1), Randy Duncan (25), Calvin Jones (62), Alex Karras (77), Nile Kinnick (24), Gordon Locke (1), Chuck Long (16), Duke Slater (15), and Larry Station (36).
All are members of both the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame and the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame, and all were two-time consensus All-Americans. In other words, they are the elite players in Hawkeye history.
Here are some Rings of Honor:
