Remember Devoe Joseph? He plays for Oregon, Iowa's next opponent Sunday at 4 in Eugene
Mar. 14, 2012 11:00 am
IOWA CITY - Iowa (18-16) and Oregon will play at 4 p.m. Sunday in a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) second-round game at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
ESPNU will air the game. The winner will play the Washington-Northwestern winner (9 p.m. Friday) in an NIT quarterfinal on Tuesday or Wednesday.
The Ducks (23-9) disposed of LSU 96-76 Tuesday night. Oregon was led by Devoe Joseph, who scored 25 points.
"We get to play another game," Joseph told reporters after Oregon's win Tuesday night. "As a senior I want to play as long as possible. We want to take advantage of the home court and hopefully make it to the final four.”
Joseph, you might remember, was a Minnesota Golden Gopher in the fall of 2011 before leaving the team. Joseph, who has scored 10 or more points in 18 straight games, brutalized Iowa for 17 points, including three 3-pointers, in an 88-53 Minnesota bludgeoning in the 2010 regular-season finale.
In the Hawkeyes-Gophers' first meeting of the 2010 season, Joseph scored 12 points and had five assists at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa won only 10 games that season.
Oregon is 16-3 at home and 8-0 in its home white uniforms. The Ducks were 13-5 in the shockingly weak Pac-12, which failed to qualify regular-season champion Washington for the NCAA tournament. Oregon's non-conference losses include Vanderbilt, BYU and Virginia - all NCAA tournament teams.
The teams did play one common opponent: Nebraska. The Ducks beat the Cornhuskers 83-76 in Lincoln on Nov. 23. Iowa split with Nebraska, winning at Lincoln and losing by six at home.
There's also familiarity with Oregon's coach. Dana Altman led Creighton for 16 seasons before joining Oregon in 2010. Altman was the last coach to lose to Iowa in an NCAA tournament game, a 69-56 Iowa win on March 15, 2001.
