Play of the Game: Rudock to Martin-Manley
Nov. 9, 2013 3:01 pm
- TIME: 1:57, second quarter
- SCORE: Tie score, 7-7
- DOWN AND DISTANCE: Iowa has the ball, third-and-7 from Purdue's 22
- FORMATION AND PERSONNEL: Iowa - Three wide receivers, tight end, one running back, quarterback in shotgun. Purdue - Three down linemen, three linebackers, five defensive backs.
- WHAT HAPPENED: Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock took the snap and fired left to wide receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley, who was open in the end zone. Martin-Manley made the catch for a 22-yard touchdown.
- WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT: After Purdue capitalized the previous possession with a touchdown on an Iowa turnover, the Hawkeyes rebounded with a 10-play drive and took the lead with less than two minutes left in the half.
- THE QUOTE 1: "I had to throw the ball low so he could get it quick," Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock said. "The corner (Ricardo Allen) that was covering the other out came over because he was playing football. I just had to put it at a spot where (Martin-Manley) could get it. He made a great play."
- THE QUOTE 2: "It was good coverage down in the red zone; it's always tight down there," Martin-Manley said.
- THE QUOTE 3: "A critical play in the game was the big pass late in the second quarter which made it 14-7," Purdue Coach Darrell Hazell said.
- THE ANALYSIS: Purdue ran a man coverage and blitzed two linebackers in the 'A' gap, right in front of Rudock. Running back Damon Bullock picked up weakside linebacker Joe Gilliam in front of Rudock and produced an important stalemate. Martin-Manley lined up between outside receiver Damond Powell and tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, who was flexed out about five yards beyond the tackle. Martin-Manley ran a seam route and was in front of cornerback Antoine Lewis. As Rudock threw the ball, Allen broke off Powell and headed toward Martin-Manley. But Rudock threw hard and somewhat low, a split-second before Allen arrived and before Lewis could break on the ball.
