Phillies fan Fran to wear Cubs hat, Hawkeyes jersey on Friday
Aug. 31, 2012 1:51 am
Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery grew up playing baseball in Philadelphia and rooting for the Phillies baseball team. Today, McCaffery will get a chance to pitch at a major-league park. Well, one pitch anyway.
McCaffery will throw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field as part of "Hawkeye Day with the Cubs." The game features the Cubs against San Francisco.
McCaffery, a former youth pitcher, is a little nervous about the opening toss.
"I'm just hoping I don't pull a John Wall," McCaffery said, referring to NBA guard who threw the ball about 50 feet and just a bit outside. "I've played a lot of catch this summer obviously. My boys have played a lot of baseball. So my arm's loosened up. But it's a little bit different atmosphere, a little bit further. You're throwing to a catcher."
McCaffery said he had control problems as a youth and regularly hit batters before leaving the pitching mound after eighth grade.
"I threw amazingly hard," McCaffery said. "That's why they used me. But then after a while they said, 'We can't just put this guy in anymore. He just walks you or hits you.' They brought me in with the bases loaded, and I hit the guy on the first pitch. I had no control."
Former Chicago Bulls guard and Iowa Hawkeyes radio color analyst Bobby Hansen will sing "Take Me Out To the Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch.
