Great timely topic this week from HawkeyeReport.com's Tom Kakert.
Last weekend, Giltner (Neb.) defensive end Drew Ott made an unannounced visit to Nebraska. The problem with that is Ott committed to Iowa this summer. There are a few cases in the past where a recruit who committed to Iowa and then went on another visit lost his Iowa ride.
Here's Tom's post on the topic along with a few other recruiting notes (I hope to make this a weekly feature):
When it comes to recruiting, Kirk Ferentz is fond of saying, “are we getting married or just holding hands?"
He is speaking of the courtship process of recruiting a prospect. Sometimes, the process can have its ups and downs. Sometimes, a prospect can get a case of cold feet before heading to the altar of signing day.
While this can cause plenty of problems for coaches, it can also cause sleepless nights for fans who follow recruiting. If a prospect committed to another school is going to visit Iowa, that's considered a good thing and the recruit becomes a fan favorite. If an Iowa commit's eye wanders, look out.
This past weekend, 2012 Iowa commit Drew Ott did something he thought was innocent on the surface. The Giltner, Neb., native, who committed to Iowa in June, attended the Cornhuskers' 40-7 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga while Iowa was beating another team from Tennessee. He was also spotted on the sidelines wearing a Nebraska t-shirt. He also didn't let the Iowa coaches know he was making the visit.
It should be noted that Ott, who has put together some very impressive stats early in his senior season and is slated to play defensive end for the Hawkeyes, doesn't hold a Nebraska offer.
Still the visit raised more than a few eyebrows and the blood pressure of more than a few Iowa fans.
Ott said earlier this week via text that the Iowa coaches called him and they were upset with the visit to Lincoln, but he reiterated that he was 100% committed to the Hawkeyes.
One year ago Iowa heard the same sort of responses from another prospect who committed to the Hawkeyes, Melvin Gordon from Kenosha, Wis. Gordon verbally committed to Iowa in August and then showed up at Wisconsin's game against Ohio State.
At the time he said he was just there with some teammates and was 100% committed to the Hawkeyes. By the end of November, he backed out of his Iowa commitment. Then, in early December, he committed to Wisconsin.
Of course, it does go the other direction. Back in 2003, Albert Young flipped from Wisconsin to Iowa. In 2008, Riley Reiff committed to Iowa in the spring of 2007, then flipped to Nebraska and the came back to Iowa. In that same class, John Wienke switched his verbal commitment from Michigan to Iowa. In 2010, C.J. Fiedorowicz changed his verbal commitment from Illinois to Iowa. Last year, Jordan Lomax made the change from Virginia to Iowa late in the process.
Bottom line, recruiting is never over until you get them to the altar on the first Wednesday in February and they say, “I do.”
As it stands now, Iowa has 10 commitments.
Other recruiting notes
Four-star prospect Amara Darboh from West Des Moines Dowling has set up his first official visit. The wide receiver prospect will visit Wisconsin this weekend. He will also likely visit Iowa and Michigan during the season, with Florida and Notre Dame visits after the season.
Four star linebacker Quanzell Lambert from Sicklerville, N.J., will make an official visit to Iowa on Oct. 15. He also has visits set to Northwestern on Oct. 7, Nebraska on Oct. 28, and Alabama Dec. 9. Lambert also will eventually visit Oklahoma.
Three-star defensive lineman Nate Lohn has tentatively scheduled his official visit to Iowa for next weekend. If that doesn't happen, he will likely visit Iowa in October. Lohn is also looking at an Oct. 1 visit to Stanford.
