Northwestern's Colter fighting through ankle injury

IOWA CITY -- Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter remains questionable with a sprained ankle, but the senior practiced Tuesday morning with hopes of playing against Iowa on Saturday.

Colter, who stands 6 foot and weighs 190 pounds, seriously injured his ankle against Wisconsin two weeks ago. He suffered the injury in the first quarter and tried to play through it. He did not play Saturday in a 20-17 loss against Minnesota. Iowa (4-3, 1-2) and Northwestern (4-3, 0-3) play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

"I feel good, I'm glad to get back to practice," Colter told The Gazette. When asked if he can play Saturday, Colter said, "We'll see. Obviously it was my first day back at practice and things went well. But it's day-to-day. We'll see how it goes."

Colter is a weapon at more than one position. He's thrown three touchdowns and passed for 396 yards, but he's also rushed for 263 yards and four scores in six games. Colter plays multiple positions for the Wildcats, including slot receiver. He's caught only one pass for nine yards this year, but he has 35 catches for 676 yards on his four-year resume.

Colter initially stayed off his foot to let the ankle heal.

"I had a few different medical procedures on it, and that's been helping me out," he said. "Right now it's about strengthening it and getting back."

Colter admits he's far from 100 percent right now, but he's doing what he can to return Saturday.

"I wasn't out here today doing everything I can," Colter said. "Obviously I was running the ball and making little cuts, and I wasn't doing everything I can. It's hard to say whether I'm 100 percent or anything like that. There's a little ways I can go as far as rehabbing it and getting it to feel normal. It's hard to put a number on it."
